Prevention is better than cure

Very common but little known, periodontitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue that can cause bleeding, swelling, redness and infections and can eventually lead to tooth loss. One of the main sources of inflammation is tartar, which builds up on the gums and causes them to swell, become red and painful, and then bleed for no apparent reason. This condition causes inflammation which can become infected if left untreated, and spread to the bone under the gums, which will be destroyed by the infection. If periodontal disease is left untreated, it can lead to more complications such as teeth loss and more.

Treating Gum Disease

When our clinic finds periodontitis, we develop a specialized treatment plan to effectively slow the progression of the disease. The type of treatment chosen will depend on the patient’s condition as well as the stage of growth of the disease.

It is necessary to brush your teeth and gums, as well as floss in order to clean anything that may be lodged under the gums. Daily home maintenance is often recommended to reduce the progression of periodontitis. In certain circumstances, your dentist will prescribe antibiotic or surgical treatment and recommend another consultation in the months to come.

Steps of Periodontitis Treatment

1. Evaluation

A medical evaluation, an X-ray examination as well as a periodontal chart are carried out by the dentist to make an accurate diagnosis.

2. Treatment

The dentist may choose to treat the bacterial infection with the help of antibiotics, along with surgical treatment or not. Sometimes both can be recommended.

3. Follow-up

We will suggest a second appointment if the intervention requires treatment. Scaling and surfacing to remove subgingival calculus.

4. Care

You may be prescribed an antibiotic to help heal and destroy bacteria. The dentist will provide you with hygiene instructions.
