4 things to know when booking a dental veneer consultation

There are many options available to help you enhance your smile. One of them is dental veneers. This solution can harmonize your smile, correct tooth color or conceal discolored or stained teeth. Veneers are also able to cover teeth showing slight wear.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are custom-made, thin shells attached to the visible surface of the teeth. A veneer looks like a natural tooth.

There are two types of dental veneers. The first one is porcelain veneers, also known as ceramic. The second is composite veneers or resin.

Veneers can help improve the appearance of teeth and achieve a more attractive smile. This is why veneers are a go-to for aesthetic purposes. That being said, the benefits of dental veneers go beyond simply correcting defects and enhancing the appearance of healthy teeth. Indeed, veneers can help treat cavities and repair broken or damaged teeth.

With veneers, you can say goodbye to chips and cracks in your smile.

How do you care for them?

Taking care of dental veneers is relatively straightforward. Keep them in good condition by following the same oral health and hygiene practices as natural teeth.

Our tips for optimum care are as follows:

  • Floss at least once a day
  • Brush twice a day, and preferably using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Plan regular visits to the dentist for professional cleaning and scaling.

How long do dental veneers last?

The lifespan of dental veneers depends on the type you opt for.

Porcelain or ceramic dental veneers last between 10 and 15 years. That said, for some people, this type of veneer can remain intact for up to 20 years. During this period, the shape and shade of your veneers should not change. Of course, this data depends on optimal maintenance and factors.

Composite resin solutions, on the other hand, have a shorter lifespan of around 5 years. Although more affordable, they are also more delicate, which is why their lifespan is shorter.

In both cases, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene once the veneers are in place. This will keep them in excellent condition for as long as possible.

Is this solution ideal for everyone?

Unfortunately, dentists can’t prescribe this solution for everyone. Namely, patients with problematic teeth can’t receive this dental procedure. Which is why dentists check their patients’ mouth before considering this alternative. In particular, they make sure the teeth are in perfect health and unaffected by decay or gum disease.

Your dentist may also advise against a veneer procedure for other reasons including tooth structure. Your tooth enamel must be in good condition to receive this treatment, and your teeth must not be too worn. Similarly, dental veneers may not be for you if you grind your teeth. We recommend you consult your dentist to determine the best solution for your dental condition.

If veneers are not an option for you, there are a number of other treatments available. For example, teeth whitening can improve tooth shade and rid your teeth of unwanted coffee or red wine stain. If you wish to align your smile, you may find orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign an interesting alternative.
